My name is Robert Hasselaar (24), student at the Technical University of Delft. After having completed my Bachelors of Civil Engineering in May, I will be starting my masters in August: Hydraulic engineering and water resources management, which will be tought in Singapore and Delft. Before starting this master and hiding in the books again, I wanted to get some experience in the field and see a real engineering project.

I have been offered this internship at Royal Haskoning in Cabo Verde. The island of Sal is enlarging their harbour with the help of this engineering company. There are two phases in this harbour project and the first one is well under way right now.

The Intership works comprise the writing and later on organising and planning of the monthly progress and compliance reports. Furthermore, I am here to assist in the evaluation of the claims of the Contractor and the preparation of the claims of the Engineer.

I will be posting on my adventures and experiences here in Cabe Verde, so stay tuned!

Haskoning Nederland B.V. has won the international tender for the supervision of the construction of the expansion and modernization of the Port of Palmeira, Phase 1 and 2. The name of this project is “Modernization and Expansion of the Port of Palmeira”.
Description of project
The project works have been divided into two phases. The first phase is in progress and is planned to be completed at the end of September. The construction works of both phases are described next:

Phase 1: Prolongation and enlargement of the existing quay, including seawall, slope protection, navigational aids, and the development of land infrastructures.
The construction of this Phase 1 has already been contracted to the MOTA-Engil / CPTP / Armando Cunha consortium.

Phase 2: Construction of a new quay, parallel to the existing one, located at the West side of it, including access road, seawall, slope protection, navigational aids, and several buildings in the new Port complex.
For the construction of Phase 2 an international tender will be launched in the course of 2010.
