Sampai jumpa Indonesia!
This last blog will be a short refection on what my experiences were of working in Indonesia. My way of perceiving working in Indonesia changed with the week, sometimes they were good, at other times situations made it difficult. In general I am very positive about Indonesia and working here. The people are friendly and willing to help, even though when trying to achieve something can be difficult at times. I have learned to be completely flexible with planning. I wouldn’t say that I was not flexible before I got here, but it was certainly put to the test here and often made me rethink my flexibility. Even though this journey was learning and experiencing, I can say that I have achieved something.
I wrote in one of my first blogs that I was learning to speak Indonesian, so let me give it a shot: Saya bisa mengerti bahasa Indonesia tapi berbicara dengan mudah, kadang-kadang sedikit sulit. Saya harus berlatih terus, dan mungkin satu hari lagi di masa depan saya bisa pinter berbahasa Indonesia! So, basically saying I can speak Indonesian but still needs a lot of practice! (And perhaps some working on my grammar…).
The mix of different cultures here will make every culture fanatic very happy. The big, bustling and dynamic cities are a complete opposite to what you see outside the city. Working in Indonesia is challenging and yet relatively easy. One of my favourite quotes that I discovered during my literature research is:
“One of the nice things about studying Indonesia is that order and chaos look so very much alike” (quoted from Clifford Geertz).
Once you are in Indonesia and have been for several months, the quote really describes what you are experiencing.
