I am Rosanne van Kessel, 20 years old and I was born in Den Helder. I just started my internship in Maritime (Structural) Engineering in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Currently I am in my 3rd year of my BSc in Civil Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Amsterdam.
It has always been a dream for me to fulfill my internship abroad. So that’s why I started 6 months ago with sending job applications to Dutch companies who have offices all around the world.
Within a week I received a call from Royal Haskoning. They told me that they would contact the office in Vietnam and ask if they were interested in having an intern for 6 months. The office in Vietnam quick responded and before I knew I had a job interview in Rotterdam with the Business Manager of Maritime & Waterways Vietnam.
This all has led to this amazing internship at Royal Haskoning in HCMC*. Because I have chosen Structural Engineering as my specialization, I hope I can learn a lot about Maritime Structural Engineering during my internship here in Asia.
The first working weeks will comprise the writing and possibly later on organizing and planning of the monthly progress and site visit reports.
I hope you will all enjoy my nedeco blogs. The blogs will be work related, so that maybe you can imagine what it’s like to work in such an interesting and dynamic city as HCMC.

Project information
The Employer, Gemadept-Terminal Link Cai Mep Terminal JSC, (GemaLink), will develop the GemaLink Container Terminal in the mouth of the Cai Mep River in the South of Vietnam
The container terminal will be constructed under an EPC with a targeted total throughput capacity of 2,000,000 TEU / annum. The container terminal will be used for import, export and transshipment of containers from Vietnam. Containers will be transferred between the terminal and the hinterland by both road going trucks and river going barges.
The envisaged container terminal includes:
- 800m of quay to accommodate the next generation of container ships.
- 8 No. Ship to Shore (STS) cranes for loading and unloading operations at the main quay.
- Approximately 17 has of RTG stack yard including roadways.
- Approximately 8 has of empty container handling yard including roadways.
- Approximately 8 has of service area, including gatehouses, buildings, workshops, roads and other facilities
Description of project
The proposed scope of work covers the full implementation phase of the project, from the signing of the contract to the end of the Defects Notification Period. RH propose a flexibe team of both domestic and European based staff organised to provide effective assistance to the Client for coverage of both the contractor’s design and construction activities. By involving a team of experienced domestic and senior European experts RH can provide proactive help and support in ensuring that the Client’s responsibilities and decisions relating to the EPC Contract are performed effectively and in the Client’s best long term interests.The scope of works consists of the following main components:
1. Component A: Review of the Contractor’s design
2. Component B: On-site supervision of the works
Under the EPC form of contract, the contract is administered by the Employer. The Employer can appoint an Employer’s Representative, to whom he can delegate some or virtually all his powers. This includes but is not limited to:
- Receiving and dealing with all technical and contractual communication issued by the Contractor.
- Using reasonable endeavours to verify that the Contractor fulfils his obligations under the contract such as the Employer’s Requirements and the Time for Completion.
- Fulfilling the Employer’s obligations or monitoring the Employer’s actions / decisions as far as being within the Consultants’ control.
- Informing the Employer about the project progress and all main technical and contractual issues.
- Looking after the Employer’s best interests, in cooperation with him.
