I started the first part of my internship this winter at the Alkyon headquarters in Marknesse. I learned to use hydrodynamic models and became familiar with the different methods to approach complex modeling problems.

This spring I will be conducting research for Alkyon Hydraulic Consultancy and Research at Stanford University. I will examine the effects of sea level rise along the Californian coast. In order to do so I will develop a hydro dynamical model to simulate the water flow in the Pacific ocean. In the future, this model will be accurate enough to use in operation prediction systems, providing online water level and velocity predictions.

During my stay in the U.S. I will work together closely with a research group at Stanford University that is studying the effects of sea level rise in several important ports throughout the world.

Description of project

Alkyon is developing a model along the Californian coast in order to predict the water movement in the Pacific Ocean. The purpose of the model is to gain insight in the effects of sea level rise on tidal motion. Merel Witteveen will develop the model as part of her graduation project at Utrecht University.
She will be working partly at the Alkyon office in Marknesse (Netherlands) and partly at Stanford University (CA, USA) where there is a large research group studying the effects of sea level rise around ports.
