‘Kazakhstan? How did you get by that?’ That’s the question I’ve heard the most in the past four months. The explanation:
I always wanted to have my internship abroad. So I sent my application form to several companies. I had response of most of them, but all for a trainee in the Netherlands. From Witteveen+Bos I had a special reaction. They offered me a trainee in Aktau, Kazakhstan. I was more thinking of America or Australia, but Kazakhstan...
But actually, why not? A total different country, with also a different culture. A lot of things to discover. And so I took the opportunity.

The project:
During my trainee I will work on the Caspian Sea project.
Beneath the Caspian Sea there are a several oil fields. A co-operation of oil companies invested to create islands in the Caspian Sea. When the islands are completed, they can place there drilling machines on it and drill for oil. Witteveen+Bos is designer and adviser for the co-operation. They make drawings for the set-up of the islands but also make calculations. For example: What kind of Sheet piles do we need? What kind of forces work on it, how big are these forces. They also have to design the set-up and topside of the island: drainage, foundations, water intakes etc.
I'll have to make drawings, write technical notes, make some (small) calculations and more work I don't know about jet.

My name is Arjan van den Brink (21) and I'm studying civil engineering at Windesheim in Zwolle. This is a school for higher professional education where I'm a 3th year student. The first two years of my study were a common part with basic subjects about all different sides of civil engineering. After my current internship I have plans to specialize in construction, and after that I would like to study at Delft University of Technology. The common purpose of this internship is to get a first experience and more knowledge about a subject which I like. Another goal is to get an overall picture of the different types of jobs within an engineering company.

There are several reasons why I’m doing this internship abroad. I never traveled around the world and want to know more about living outside Europe and the western culture. Besides that I also wanted to develop my technical knowledge in combination with offshore constructions. So when I spoke with an employee of Witteveen+Bos and he offered me this opportunity I was convinced this would be a great and informative experience for me. Other reasons for an internship abroad are to improve my English skills and of course to know more about other cultures, languages and habits.

I recently graduated as a Human Geographer at the Radboud University in Nijmegen. Before and during my studies, my interest has always strongly been on development related issues. This motivated me to specialize in Development Geography and to conduct my master thesis research abroad. The latter dealt with the impact of international migration on gender relations and focused specifically on the possible contribution of female migration to women’s development. I conducted my research in Bolivia during a period of nine months; an experience that has contributed significantly to my understanding of development issues and cooperation, and has enticed me to further explore this path in my future professional life as well.
When the opportunity arised for me to go to Bangladesh on an internship with Euroconsult Mott MacDonald and participate in the Char Development and Settlement Project Phase III, it did not take me long to decide. Not only will it provide me with an opportunity to gain valuable work experience and more insight into development issues, but it will also enable me to further explore a topic close at heart; gender relations and women’s development.

The main aim of my work the coming months will be to describe the gender related interventions of the Char Development and Settlement Project Phase III and to assess the impact of these interventions on the position of the women in the project area. This assessment will focus on women’s position in both material and immaterial sense, and therefore deal with issues such as their income, access to services, status and influence. Another objective is to gain preliminary insight into the sustainability of the changes in the position of women as a result of the project.
Information will be gathered by means of interviews with members of the Technical Assistance Team, representatives of involved government agencies and NGO’s, and the project’s beneficiaries (i.e. female settlers and – to a lesser extent – male settlers). My work will ultimately result in the publication of a Technical Report on Gender.

1. Projectmanagement
Monte Carlo of PDM).

The design for Drilling Centre 05 started in 2008 and will need to be completed by April 2009. DC05 consists of a sheetpile structure, backfilled with limestone quarry run and covered with pre-cast concrete elements, such as foundations and trenches. It also incorporates a berth for two Icebreaking Emergency Evacuation Vessels and floating Living Quarters. On the east and south side, rock breakwaters will protect the berth and quay from ice and waves.
Construction has started with placement of the rock fill just before the winter season (December - March) and will continue with installing the sheetpile retaining structures in April.
Engineering challenges are large ice loads on the retaining structures, a tight time schedule and the design of the point where connecting pipelines come ashore.

To further develop the oil fields in the North Caspian Sea Witteveen+Bos Kazakhstan will con-tinue with civil design activities for new islands. The designs for the hubs Complex A and D and drilling centre EPC3 are nearly complete, and drilling centre EPC2 is well under way.
Witteveen+Bos Kazakhstan has been responsible for all civil design works for the development of offshore hubs and drilling islands in the Caspian Sea since 2004. A hub consists of a number of offshore manmade islands where crude oil and gasses are collected, separated and pumped to onshore processing facilities. A number of barriers surround the hub to provide protection against waves and ice. The complex covers an area of approximately 1 by 2 km.
Drilling islands are much smaller, 240 by 160 m and will house a drilling rig during 3-5 years, after which a production rig is installed. These drilling islands are partly protected from waves and ice by temporary rock barriers.
