Indicate Potential Micro-Hydropower locations
Project information
The world’s energy consumption will increase rapidly and renewable energy sources will play a more important role in the future. Micro-Hydropower in specific has a large untapped potential, especially in undeveloped and remote areas. The worldwide potential of this recourse is not yet evaluated in detail, and the exact locations of the potential spots have not been mapped yet. This project aims to give insight in the potential and the allocation of micro hydropower.
Description of project
Global precipitation and runoff data has to be collected ,evaluated and processed. Digital Elevation Models have to be adjusted for hydrological purposes in order to derive flow directions. The runoff data combined with the flow directions should generate accurate flow accumulation in a grid. The accumulated flow is translated into river discharge. The discharge predicted from the model has to be validated by measuring discharge of small tropical streams and compare the discharges.
From the Digital Elevation Model locations with significant “head” in combination with sufficient discharge should be filtrated.
Fieldwork to check a potential location generated by the model is executed. The discharge and the head will be examined.
The goal is to create a world map with potential micro-hydropower locations, and be able to indicate countries or regions with a lot of potential, and distinguish specific spots.
