Project information
With the rapid development of the computer technology and its successful application in ship engineering, the method of computer simulation using the mathematical models becomes more and more popular. It provides a convenient tool for predicting ship maneuverability at the design stage. One of the preconditions for applying this kind of method is the modeling of equations describing the maneuvering motion.
To investigate the ship maneuverability by means of mathematical tool, two right-handed coordinate systems are adopted: the earth-fixed coordinate system and the body-fixed coordinate system which moves together with the ship.
Description of project
Referring to the coordinate system, the maneuvering motion of the ship can be written using modular model based on the equation of motion as follows:Subscripts H, P, R and W correspond to force and moment acting on the hull, propeller, rudder, and wind respectively.
During this internship my project firstly, is to master the method for determining the hydrodynamic forces acting on a maneuvering ship, derive non-dimensional forces and moments acting on the hull, to produce “Standards for Ship Maneuverability” according to IMO (International Maritime Organization).
For this purpose the simulation program Ship-Navigator developed by group of experts at Alkyon/Arcadis BV will be used and in the same time to be analyzed and if possible upgraded until it has produced the closest maneuvering characteristic as in real condition (test and validation).
And secondly, after successfully passed the test and validation process, the program will be used for simulations for the project of the development on the Port of Itajai, Brazil which is to determine the most suitable layout of new turning basin.
During this internship I will be working from Alkyon/Arcadis office in Marknesse, Netherlands.
