1 image/pjpeg WaterWheel_klein.JPG 71288 The overall objective of the Fayoum Water Users Organization Project (FaWUOP) is to assist the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI) in improving water management in the project area, the Fayoum, for increased efficiency and sustainable use of land and water, resulting in economic growth and the alleviation of poverty. Within this overall framework, the specific purpose of the project is the basin-wide introduction of water users&rsquo; organizations (WUOs) at various levels, and to enhance the ability of both governmental agencies and WUOs to practice participatory, integrated water management, through capacity building and institutional reform. <br /> Project activities are organized into six inter-related components:<br /> (i) Formation of new WUOs to cover the entire area of the Fayoum<br /> (ii) Consolidation of existing WUOs <br /> (iii) Establishment of Integrated Water Management (IWM) Districts and an IWM Directorate<br /> (iv) Improvement of the environmental situation in and around the water resources<br /> (v) Capacity building of implementing agencies and their staff<br /> (vi) Strengthening of the role of women in water management in the Fayoum.<br /> Government of Egypt Africa Euroconsult Mott MacDonald: € 2,466,000 Egypt 2009-07-21T14:06:49+02:00 The project is a next step in the long-running efforts in the Fayoum to organize water users and support their role as active participants in the water management and development process. A forerunner was the Fayoum Water Management and Drainage Improvement Project (FWMDIP) that started in 1993. Though initially focused on technical irrigation and drainage improvements, it later made a start with establishing Local Water Boards (LWB).
