data collection

My green light presentation for Wageningen University went well, and I was allowed to continue the way I set out the approach and methods for the coastal flooding management study. Unfortunately the world cup final went not the way I desired, though it worked soothing that most Nigerians supported Holland!

For the project the collection of the LiDAR elevation data will be very important, data which had been flown in by Lagos State. The very high resolution and accuracy data will be essential to map areas, and to indicate flood risk zones. The process of obtaining this dataset is rather slow, since you are dependant on the lengthy procedures you have to go through working with a governmental body in Nigeria. Permission had been given, so soon I can copy the relevant parts of the dataset.

Now it is rainy season in Nigeria. Already a couple of times I had to jump out the car to check with rolled up trousers how deep the inundated parts of the streets were, before the car could drive on. My driver asked why I’m working on a study concerning coastal flooding, while the water is coming from other directions as well…

When the data is obtained, we can finally start with modeling and working towards one of the objectives of the study; the provision of flood risk maps.
