Settling in Juba

The first month

In the last weeks I have settled down a bit, both as a resident of Juba and in my new role of a trainee consultant. Juba is an interesting city to live in, people keep telling me it has changed a lot in the last years. There is a variety of restaurants, bars and hotels you can go to for entertainment. Though due to security reasons nightlife ends around night or maximum at three (the former for most expatriates). Besides this most social life evolves around work and development issues, as most people work in this business and otherwise are hard to get in touch with. Although my Sunday activity brings me in touch with different and beautiful people: the street children of Juba. I am still trying, and definately starting, to find my way to get to know real Juba.

In the Capacity Building Trust Fund I divide my activities between maintaining a database for experts and between getting acquainted and working on the logical framework approach. Concerning the database I keep track of the type of experts expressing interest in acting as service providers in our projects. I monitor if this is equal to the expertise actually asked for in our upcoming projects. In order to reach out to experts I have been involved in the advertisement of a call for experts.

The second activity of logical framework approach has introduced me to another new aspect of programme management. In a logic model a project states its goal, objectives, results and activities in order to display and test the logic underneath decision making. Within the CBTF project there are several projects running or about to run, so far the logic model of the complete CBTF project has not yet been connected to the smaller projects. It is my task to give an oversight of the different projects, their logic models and the way they contribute to the broader goal of the CBTF project. So far this is interesting, and I am eager to gain knowledge and skills in this part of programme management, however the different terminologies and interpretations of logic models make it hard to integrate the whole. Overall I am very happy I have decided to enjoy this opportunity in Juba. I am enjoying as well my work life as my social life.
